Happy Day My Friends,
In our journey towards becoming the best version of ourselves, a crucial component is achieving a state of optimum well-being. Why? Because as we transition along the well-being spectrum from illness, dysfunction, or dissatisfaction towards wellness, function, and satisfaction, our focus and attention can be directed towards the aspects of life we desire to master and excel in.
Well-being encompasses good physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health, along with satisfaction in personal relationships, occupation, and financial situation. While some individuals may excel in all these areas, for most of us, there are struggles in one or more aspects. Yet, the good news is that regardless of where you currently stand on the spectrum, everyone possesses the capacity and ability to take small steps towards well-being.

Existing habits can provide insight into where an individual stands within the well-being spectrum. Modifying or changing these habits is a powerful way to shift towards a more positive direction. As depicted in the picture above, poor lifestyle habits tend to move us towards illness, dysfunction, or dissatisfaction. Conversely, adopting good lifestyle habits propels us towards the side of the spectrum that offers well-being and satisfaction.
Goal setting is a powerful tool for initiating change in individuals' habits for several reasons:
1.Provides Self-awareness and self-discovery:
The process of goal-setting requires individuals to reflect on their values, strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations, fostering self-awareness and self-discovery.
2. Provides Clarity and Focus:
Setting clear and specific goals helps individuals identify what they want to achieve and why it's important to them. This clarity and focus provide a sense of direction, guiding their actions and decisions towards the desired outcome.
3. Motivates Action:
Goals serve as motivators, inspiring individuals to take action and make positive changes in their habits. The desire to achieve a specific goal creates a sense of urgency and commitment, driving individuals to overcome obstacles and persist in their efforts.
4. Allows for Progress Tracking:
By setting measurable goals, you can track your progress and celebrate your achievements along the way, which boosts confidence and self-esteem.
5. Provides with Continuous Learning:
Pursuing goals often involves acquiring new skills, knowledge, and experiences, fostering continuous learning and personal development.
6. Builds Self-Efficacy:
Setting and achieving goals builds self-efficacy—the belief in one's ability to succeed. Each successful accomplishment reinforces individuals' confidence in their capabilities, empowering them to tackle new challenges and make further changes in their habits.
7. Resilience and perseverance:
Overcoming obstacles and setbacks while working towards goals can develop resilience, perseverance, and a growth mindset.
With that said, let’s define a goal as a desired outcome or result that a person envisions and commits to achieving. When meeting with a coach and utilizing goal setting, the coach will often help set SMART goals. SMART goals are desired outcomes stated in a specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound manner which provides direction and, guide actions and decisions towards a specific target.

There are different types of goals. At WellBeing w/Coach Edna, we primarily work with the followings:
Time Specific Goals:
Long-Term Goals: These goals are ambitious objectives that you aim to achieve over an extended period, typically spanning several months or years. These goals provide an overarching vision for your future and often require sustained effort and commitment. Examples include:
Building a successful career
Attaining financial independence
Achieving personal fulfillment and happiness
Medium-Term Goals: These goals serve as stepping stones towards your long-term aspirations, typically spanning months to a few years. They break down your long-term vision into manageable milestones, making it easier to track progress and stay motivated. Examples include:
Completing a degree or certification
Saving a specific amount of money for a major purchase
Developing a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise and nutrition
Short-Term Goals: These goals are specific, actionable tasks or objectives that you aim to accomplish within a relatively short time frame, usually days to a few weeks. They focus on immediate actions and provide a sense of accomplishment, keeping you motivated as you work towards larger goals. Examples include:
Finishing a project or assignment by a deadline
Attending a networking event to expand your professional connections
Practicing a new skill or hobby for a set amount of time each day
Outcome Goals: These goals focus on the desired result or outcome you want to achieve. They are often related to tangible achievements or milestones that you aim to reach. Examples include:
Running a marathon
Publishing a book
Starting a successful business
Process Goals: These goals, on the other hand, focus on the actions or processes you need to undertake to achieve your desired outcome. They are more about the journey than the destination and emphasize the steps you take along the way. Examples include:
Running a certain number of miles per week
Writing a set number of pages each day
Networking with a certain number of potential clients or collaborators each month
Performance Goals: These goals are focused on improving specific skills or competencies to enhance your overall performance in various areas of life. These goals are often measurable and actionable, allowing you to track your progress and identify areas for improvement. Examples include:
Increasing productivity by a certain percentage
Improving public speaking skills by participating in Toastmasters
Enhancing leadership abilities through leadership training programs
Understanding these different types of goals can support personal growth and development, enabling individuals to plan and pursue their aspirations with clarity and purpose.
Overall, by setting clear goals and consistently working towards their attainment, individuals can take proactive steps towards cultivating positive changes in their lifestyles and habits, ultimately leading to enhanced well-being and fulfillment.
On our next blog we’ll take a look at how goals play a crucial role in shaping lifestyles and habit creation by providing direction, motivation, and structure to our daily routines, as well as what are the benefits of partnering with a health and lifestyle coach. Until then!
