The Power of Choice

The reality is that we come into this existence with what religion calls "the gift of Free Will." This inalienable right can be equated to our Power of Choice. We exercise this power whether we are conscious of it or not, but being aware of it can make the big shift to an empowered life.

At every moment of our lives, we are making choices. Writing this article is a choice for me. Reading it is a choice for you. Deciding to stop reading it is another choice. In every single movement, consciously or subconsciously, we are making choices. Every action or inaction has a consequence, and based on those consequences, our daily circumstances are revealed. Yes, even thinking is considered an action, so every thought you have has a consequence. Being aware of your thoughts is a choice fundamental to transformation and empowerment. I have the power to choose whether to have happy thoughts or sad ones. It is a choice to have fearful thoughts or loving ones. I bring this up because thoughts are the precursors to physical action.

Athletes and sports coaches often talk about “mindset” when training their athletes—the type of thoughts chosen to elevate performance. By changing their thoughts (or belief patterns), athletes enhance their abilities. Deciding to change your mindset is a choice, and it becomes a powerful tool if the beliefs you are trying to establish enhance your abilities and help you become an empowered human being.

How do we know if we are making the right choices? Your present circumstances are evidence of your choices. Are you satisfied with your current life? If "Yes" or "For the most part" are your answers, then you know you are making some good choices. If your answer is "No," "Rarely," or "Occasionally," it may be time to analyze how you are making your choices.

Do you go through your day on autopilot, making subconscious decisions? Do you base your choices on the opinions of others? Do you follow society's conventional or mainstream philosophy without questioning or reasoning? Do you make your choices when you are angry, frustrated, anxious, worried, or fearful? Do you allow others to make decisions for you? If your answers are "Yes," "Maybe," "Perhaps," or "Sometimes," this may indicate you are making poor choices—or not making them at all. By the way, not making a choice is still a choice.

Living an empowered life begins with choosing to be aware of your thoughts and actions and then taking responsibility for the consequences those choices bring. Living an empowered life starts with deciding not to be a victim but to be victorious.

The only way to an empowered life is by the choices we make every single moment and that requires constant awareness. By consciously exercising our power of choice, we unlock our true potentials.

Now, I invite you to use your power of choice by looking within and deciding what small, consistent steps you want to start taking toward the most empowered version of YOU!
