Evidence-Based Practice

Happy Day My Friends,

As a Health and Well-Being Coach certified by the National Board of Health and Wellness Coaching, my scope of practice specifies that our approach, process, and guidance must be grounded in evidence-based evidence-based practices.

Similarly, as a NASM-certified personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist, my focus also emphasizes the importance of evidence-based exercise programs. evidence-based exercise programs.

So, what does evidence-based practice mean?

As I researched this concept, I found that its definition has evolved over the years, but one essential component has always been present: “The goal of evidence-based practice is to eliminate unsound or outdated practices in favor of more effective ones, shifting decision-making from tradition, intuition, and unsystematic experience to firmly grounded scientific research.” This means that Certified Health and Wellness Coaches, Personal Trainers, and Nutrition Coaches need to base their programs and guidance on scientific evidence—specifically, the weight of scientific research, which I will explain below.

Today, evidence-based practice is seen as the integration of: (1) the weight of evidence from scientific research; (2) clinical expertise and expert opinion based on field observations; (3) and individual client needs and preferences.

(1) The weight of the evidence from scientific research:

The "weight of evidence" refers to the general consensus within research. Science is an ongoing process of accumulating evidence and examining its weight. Sometimes studies contradict one another, which is a natural part of this process. However, as time progresses and scientists gather more high-quality evidence (through systematic reviews and meta-analyses), the broader body of research begins to shape the recommendations health professionals offer their clients.

New evidence can sometimes overturn previous findings. A good example of this is the debate between butter and margarine. Decades ago, as research suggested a link between saturated fat in butter and heart disease, scientists recommended margarine as a healthier alternative. However, further studies revealed that trans fats in margarine posed an even greater risk for heart disease than saturated fats. Based on this new evidence, recommendations were updated to limit both butter and trans fats.

(2) Clinical expertise and expert opinion based on field observations:

The knowledge, judgment, and critical reasoning gained through professional training and experience are also vital components of evidence-based practice. These skills, combined with field observations, help fill in gaps in scientific knowledge and provide practical insights.

(3) Individual client needs and preferences:

While science can provide general guidelines, it cannot always offer a perfect program for every client. Even the most scientifically sound plan is ineffective if the client cannot adhere to it. Evidence-based practice takes into account a client’s personal circumstances, values, priorities, and preferences.

For example, suppose science shows that both Wellness Program A and Wellness Program B are effective, but Program A is slightly better. If a client can only stick to Program B, then Program B is the better choice for that individual.

In conclusion, embracing an evidence-based allows us, as health and well-being practitioners, to offer the most effective, tailored support to our clients. By integrating scientific evidence, professional expertise, and an understanding of individual client needs, we create a holistic framework for transformative change.
